The Founder of MMAWT legacy initiative and wife of the Sokoto State Governor, Hajiya Maryam Mairo Aminu Waziri Tambuwal led the members of the foundation to Gwadabawa local government to mark the 2019 UN declared 16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence which ended today December 10th which also happens to be the Internationally declared Human Rights Day.

The Wife of the Governor also flagged off the foundation’s Empowerment scheme which targeted 1000 beneficiaries.

The event was kickstarted with the traditional homage paid to the Sarkin Gobir of Gwadabawa, Alhaji Muhammad Zayyana at his Palace by the Wife of the Governor and her entourage. While receiving her the Sarkin Gobir of Gwadabawa expressed his appreciation for the choice of his domain and spoke extensively against Gender-Based Violence which he described as a barbaric behavior
and the present bill in the state house of assembly where it encompasses GBV and HR of which he emphasized was one that he had
Signed of on when he was in the state assembly .

Hajiya Maryam Mairo Aminu Waziri Tambuwal later led an advocacy walk to the venue of a town hall meeting, along with, the wife of the Deputy Governor, Hajiya Hauwa Manir Dan’iya, Wife of the former Sokoto State governor, Hajiya Jamila Bafarawa, the Wife of the Secretary to the state government, Hajiya Asiya Sa’idu Umar, members of various organizations, womens groups, students and associates.

The Town hall meeting held at the Auditorium of government Secondary School, Gwadabawa was declared open by the Sole administrator of the local government, Alhaji Aminu Aya, who expressed his appreciation for the choice of Gwadabawa local government as the host of the event.

In her introductory presentation tagged :why we are here, Dr Balbasatu Ibrahim, took time to define Gender-Based Violence to the audience, its negative effects and steps being taken to fight against it.

Dr Aisha Sanusi of the Usman Danfodio University Sokoto also presented a paper on child rights, while a member of FOMWAN’s Da’awah committee spoke on the Islamic perception on Gender Based Violence.

While declaring the MMAWT legacy initiative Empowerment programme, which empowered a total of 1000 beneficiaries, the founder of MMAWT legacy initiative and wife of the Sokoto State Governor, Hajiya Maryam Mairo Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, called on the beneficiaries to make good use of the seed capital being provided to them and thanked both UBA and Access bank for Keying into the empowerment scheme as part of their corporate social responsibility.

In their goodwill messages, Hajiya Jamila Bafarawa and Hajiya Hauwa Manir Dan’iya both commended the Wife of the Governor for her passion towards the drive to end Gender-Based Violence and her zeal to empower women and youth through her specially designed programs.

The highlight of the event was the flag-off of the distribution of 10,000 each as start up capital to 1000 beneficiaries from across the state.

MMAWT Legacy Initiative previously held a combined advocacy walk in Sokoto on the 1st of December a day declared by the United Nations as World AIDS day. The combined rally was motivated by the belief that violence in all ramifications is a contributing factor to the HIV scourge.

The Youth wing of MMAWT legacy initiative also led other youth on an advocacy visit to the Ministry of justice where they delivered a call to action letter to the representative of the commissioner of justice and attorney general, seeking an Affirmative Action against all Gender-Based Violence acts, rape and other related crimes.

The Wife of the Governor later met with the affiliated youth and women groups at the Government House, where she expressed her appreciation for their zeal towards ending violence in all ramifications. She went further to say the youth being the leaders of tomorrow are in the best position to fight the scourge so as to guarantee a safer world for the upcoming generation.
