International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women, who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
To Commemorate the day, MMAWT Legacy Initiative embarked on an outreach to the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital kware, where members of the visitation team led by the special adviser to the Governor on Female Education, Hajiya Aisha Maina, commiserated with the patients and donated toiletries, clothing and sanitary items to them as a morale booster.
In her Goodwill message, delivered by Hajiya Laraba Dattijo, the wife of the governor, congratulated the women and further said “The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is relevant in Nigeria, as women’s participation in both elective and appointive positions has been in steep and shocking decline since 1999. The country’s extant National Gender Policy (NGP) recommends 35% affirmative action, meaning in elective and appointive positions, that should be the minimum percentage of women.
The team then proceeded to Runji and Tangwale villages of Kware local government area, where members of the team went house to house and sensitized women on the significance of the day, Girl child Education, calming nerves on the fear mongering abound hygiene and the importance of Antenatal,
after which all visited households received a donation of treated mosquito nets and toiletries, while some were empowered with cash donations to serve as start up capital.
The third visit was to the Sokoto state correctional facilities where (13) Female inmates were empowered and Counselled.
To round up the activities , the visitation team also visited the combined female students of some secondary schools relocated to Hafsatu Ahmadu Bello Girls Secondary school Sokoto due to insecurity and pro-active measures on the dictates of the state government .
